EA Sports Offers Revised Roster that Includes Brett Favre on Jets
Favre's Madden 09 Cover Jinx
The ultimate Madden jinx has finally hit the maker of the game, EA Sports. In year's past, when a player was featured on the Madden video game cover, that star would suffer an injury the following season or, otherwise, perform poorly. The company needed to make arrangements before the game was even released to fix their cover and get the rosters right.
This year, EA Sports decided on Brett "the new Jet" Favre to be on the cover of Madden 09. Thinking that Favre would stay on Green Bay's roster or retire a hero, EA Sports figured that his legacy and popularity would increase sales of the game dramatically. That still remains to be seen. Maybe Madden 09 will fare better this year as the summer sports story, Brett Favre's un-retirement and subsequent trade to the New York Jets, will fuel sales. Still, it is unheard of for the Madden cover star to be on a different team the following year especially in such a fashion as Favre.

EA Sports released a statement on Monday, August 11th, stating that a roster update, including Favre as the starting quarterback of the New York Jets, will be ready the same day as the game hits the market. The action quells fears that gamers expressed in recent days. If not for the update, Madden players would have had to manually create Brett Favre and attempt to make him as realistic as possible both in his physical and athletic features. It would take hours of tinkering to figure out exactly how Favre should look and to gauge his exact attributes. He is already slated to be on the All-Madden Greats team, as a Packer.

Another obvious problem is that gamers want Favre to be featured in a Jets uniform on the cover of the game. Not only is the cover obsolete on release day but the cover man does not even play for the team on the cover.
A spokesperson for EA Sports stated on EASports.com, "We do not plan to re-issue packaging, but will offer a free downloadable cover in the coming days on EASports.com featuring Brett Favre in a Jets uniform. EA Sports Quick to Act on Updates
Thanks to a top-notch team of developers, EA Sports was able to put together this roster and cover update in quick fashion. The trade was announced early last Thursday morning. Many feared, immediately, that the game would suffer because of the already pre-determined cover. Usually Madden cover players are released in early-Spring, much too early to know that Favre would retire or even be part of such a summer drama. EA Sports successfully updated the cover and rosters as successfully as possible. Roster updates will be available throughout the season to reflect realistic changes in line-ups so that gamers can experience the most realistic and up-to-date Madden game possible.
