Often considered one of the greatest games on the NES, Punch-Out!! offered gamers an addictive pick-up-and-play experience that was both exciting and rewarding.
At a time when people were still going crazy over the Rocky films and Mike Tyson was taking over the boxing world, Nintendo decided to bring their formerly arcade-exclusive boxing series, Punch-Out!!, to the Nintendo Entertainment System. Initially released as Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, the “Baddest Man on the Planet” and former Heavyweight Champion would later be dropped from the title. This, however, did not take away from the engaging gameplay at all, and Punch-Out!! remains one of the best gaming experiences on the NES to this day. World Video Boxing AssociationThe protagonist in Punch-Out!! is a young boxer from the Bronx known as Little Mac. With his loyal trainer Doc Louis by his side, Mac ventures out on a quest to reach the top of the World Video Boxing Association, the in-game boxing promotion. As Little Mac, players must fight their way through the Minor, Major, and World Circuits in order to win championships and make it to the Dream Fight against Mike Tyson (or Mr. Dream in later versions). Gameplay – Simple, Straightforward BoxingPunch-Out!! has always been known for its simplistic controls and engaging gameplay. Little Mac has very basic offense consisting of left and right jabs and body blows. A special uppercut can also be acquired if the player meets certain requirements during a fight. In terms of defense, Little Mac can dodge from side to side, duck, and block. The game starts off easy enough, but as the player progresses, opponents become more ruthless and unpredictable. Timing is everything in Punch-Out!!. It is up to the player to time evasive and offensive techniques in order to defeat each of the contenders in the WVBA. Before attacking, opponents usually perform a certain mannerism which can help with timing a dodge followed by a jab. The window of opportunity closes more as the game goes on, so later bouts require fast reflexes and perfect timing. These simple mechanics are complemented by the game’s quirky attributes. After successful championship fights, Mac is seen training with Doc Louis. In this short cut scene, Doc rides a bike while Mac, clad in a pink sweatsuit, jogs closely behind, the Statue of Liberty slowly appearing in the background. Doc also offers “encouraging” words in between rounds. He’ll say things like, “Dancin’ like a fly, bite like a mosquito,” and, “Join the Nintendo Fun Club today!” These are just a few lines in the game which have become iconic. There is a colorful cast of boxers to be found in Punch-Out!! Each character has a unique personality and numerous idiosyncrasies which really help that character come alive. Challengers include the feeble Glass Joe who sports one victory and 99 losses; Soda Popnski (formerly Vodka Drunkenski), who laughs uncontrollably whenever Mac is down; and the powerhouse, Bald Bull. These and other characters all lead up to the Dream Fight against Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream. Graphics and SoundThe graphics in Punch-Out!! are extremely limited. The ring, which spans about 70% of the screen, is a solid color, and simple sprites make up the audience in the background. Despite this, however, the game carries an undeniable amount of charm. Boxers’ mannerisms and detailed character sprites all provide the game with a unique sense of style. The soundtrack in the game consists of only a handful of songs, but even then is successful. The theme during fights is catchy and memorable, and the rest of the game’s music is also really good. The sound is kept very basic, but shots, opponents’ attacks, and calls by the referee, who is portrayed by Mario, each have their own unique sound. Lasting ValueThere is only one mode of play in Punch-Out!!, but climbing the ranks of the WVBA is a long-lasting, trial-and-error effort which will require long periods of practice. For all its simple mechanics, the game is highly addictive. Unlike its current-gen sequel, Punch-Out!! does not feature a two-player mode. This NES classic is strictly single-player. Punch-Out!! – Then and NowPunch-Out!! was praised for its addictive gameplay which relied on quick reflexes and timing. To this day, the game remains relevant. Old-school gamers as well as new gamers are able to enjoy the game, which proves that it is a timeless classic. The variety of characters, peculiar elements, and simple yet gripping gameplay all make Punch-Out!! a NES game worth playing. Score: 8.5/10
